Transfermarkt data shows that in the past 10 years only two clubs worldwide have earned more than 1 billion euros from selling players.
Benfica and Atletico Madrid are two rare clubs that have earned more than 1 billion euros from selling players in the past 10 years according to Transfermarkt data.
In particular, Benfica is the best dealer in the world when he earned about 1.1 billion euros from the sale of 427 stars in the past decade.
Even this summer, Benfica still made about 70 million euros from the sale of Ruben Dias to Man City, although the club’s finances were affected by the COVID-19 epidemic. Last year, they grossed more than 200 million euros after selling Joao Felix, Raul Jimenez and Luka Jovic.
In the past 10 years, Benfica has also earned hundreds of millions of euros from the sale of other stars such as Ederson, Nelson Semedo, Victor Lindelof, Renato Sanches, Jan Oblak, Nemanja Matic, Axel Witsel, Fabio Coentrao, Angel di Maria, David Luiz or Ramires.
Another club that also makes more than 1 billion euros is Atletico Madrid. They earned 1.048 billion by selling top stars like Antoine Griezmann, Diego Costa, Radamel Falcao, Lucas Hernandez, Rodri, Sergio Aguero, David de Gea or Thomas Partey.
But Atletico Madrid is different from Benfica in that spending money to buy players is more than the proceeds from the sale of stars. In the past 10 years, they have lost about 50 million euros from buying and selling players.
The three clubs Juventus, Chelsea and Monaco are ranked next in the Top 10 best selling football clubs.
Juventus sold the most number of players in the world in the past 10 years at 582 people. Pogba brought in the largest revenue of 105 million euros. Meanwhile, Chelsea made the most of selling Eden Hazard to Real Madrid last summer for a fee of up to 165 million euros.
On the side of Monaco, they made up to 347 million euros from the sale of four young talents Kylian Mbappe, Thomas Lemar, James Rodriguez and Anthony Martial.
The two giants Barca and Real Madrid are only ranked seventh in terms of player sales, but the quality of their stars is unquestionable.
Barca still made 948 million euros, despite selling only 148 players. Neymar alone contributed up to 222 million euros when breaking the transfer record for PSG in the summer of 2017. But Barca still lost 674 million euros because of innocent and ineffective shopping in the past 10 years.
Similarly, Real Madrid earned 905 million euros, despite selling only 138 players. The best deals include Cristiano Ronaldo (105 million euros) or Angel di Maria (75 million euros).
Liverpool is only ranked 10th on the list of best selling football clubs with 803 million euros in revenue. Their biggest deals are Philippe Coutinho (€ 145 million), Luis Suarez (€ 80 million) and Raheem Sterling (€ 63 million).
Meanwhile, MU, Arsenal, Man City, Bayern Munich or Dortmund are not even in the Top 10.
